Start by understanding who you are actually dealing with
Before I spend much time discussing drawings or tooling with a new supplier, I want to know who is behind the quotation and where the money will go.
This is especially important when several company names appear during the same transaction.
A buyer may receive a quotation from one company name, a contract from another and bank details under a third name. That does not always mean something is wrong. In China, manufacturing and export functions are sometimes handled by different legal entities.
What matters is whether the supplier can explain the relationship clearly.
If I ask who manufactures the product, who signs the contract and who receives payment, "they are all our companies, don't worry" is not a useful answer. I want the exact Chinese legal names and I want to be able to check them.
The National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, usually referred to as GSXT, is the official place to start. Search the company's exact Chinese name or Unified Social Credit Code and compare the registration details with the quotation, contract, invoice and payment beneficiary.

Alibaba.com, Made-in-China and similar platforms can provide another useful layer of evidence. Alibaba.com's official seller onboarding rules describe business verification of company registration and the authorised contact. Its Gold Supplier information states that Gold Suppliers in China must pass an Onsite Check, while its Verified Supplier program can add third-party assessment information. These checks are better than an unsupported claim on a website, but I would not treat any platform badge as proof that the factory is suitable for my product.
At this point I am only trying to answer a basic question: is this a company I am comfortable continuing to talk to?
How this applies to SEEHOO

The size of the factory is not the first thing I would compare
A large factory can be exactly what you need.
It can also be the wrong fit.
For example, if you are buying a stable carbon fiber tube specification in large repeat quantities, a highly standardized tube factory may be a very good choice.
Now imagine a different project.
You need a telescopic pole. The first batch may only be a few dozen sets. After testing, the upper connection may change. The next version may need a different extended length. The locking structure may need another round of adjustment.
A factory built around long, stable production runs may be technically capable of making the product but still dislike the way the project develops.
A team that regularly works on custom assemblies may be much more comfortable with those changes.
That does not make one factory better than the other. They are simply built around different types of work.
So before comparing factory size, equipment count or company age, I would first think about my own order.
Is the design already fixed? Will there be repeated engineering changes? Am I buying one carbon fiber component or a finished assembly? Do I need the supplier to coordinate metal parts, plastic parts, machining and final assembly as well?
Those answers narrow the field much faster than a generic "big factory versus small factory" comparison.
Pay attention to what happens after you send the drawing
One of the easiest questions to ask a supplier is:
"Can you make this?"
Unfortunately, it is also one of the least useful.
Most salespeople will say yes.
What interests me more is what happens next.
Take a multi-section carbon fiber telescopic pole as an example. If the only questions are length, diameter and quantity, and a final price comes back immediately, I would not reject the supplier. But I would not make a decision based on that quotation either.
Someone who has worked with complete telescopic assemblies may want to know how the pole will be used at full extension, what is mounted at the top, how the bottom is fixed, which direction carries most of the load, how much movement is acceptable after locking, and which interfaces cannot change.
Those questions matter because a tube can meet its own drawing while the finished pole still does not work properly.
The sections may be individually correct but too tight after assembly. The locking component may hold the tube but create too much play. The carbon fiber part may be fine while the customer's equipment does not fit the end connection.
That is why I pay a lot of attention to the questions a supplier asks.
A supplier who understands the product often notices something the buyer has not fully defined yet.
"We need to check that first" is sometimes the answer I want to hear
There is a strange habit in custom manufacturing: the supplier who gives the fastest answer can sometimes look like the strongest supplier.
In practice, new projects often contain things that cannot be confirmed immediately.
A drawing may be incomplete. A performance requirement may not include a test method. A tolerance may look possible on one component but become difficult after several parts are assembled together.
In those situations, I am comfortable hearing an engineer say that something still needs to be checked.
For example, they may need to review an interface before confirming the price, make one trial part before promising a fit, or agree on a test method before promising a mechanical result.
That does not worry me.
What worries me more is when the information is clearly incomplete but every answer is still "yes, no problem."
Custom manufacturing always contains some uncertainty at the beginning. The important part is whether the supplier identifies it early enough to deal with it.
Ask how your product will actually be made
Factory photos are useful, but I would not spend too much time counting machines before I understand the production route.
If I am buying a complete carbon fiber telescopic pole, I want to know what happens from the time the drawing is approved until the finished pole is packed.
Who reviews the structure? Where are the carbon fiber tubes formed? Who machines the tube ends and mating areas? Who checks the fit between sections? Who designs or installs the locking components? Where do the metal or plastic parts come from? Who assembles the complete pole? What gets checked before shipment?
These questions make equipment much easier to evaluate.
If the product really requires a particular curing process, then I want to understand the curing equipment and process controls.
If matched tooling and compression molding are relevant to a molded component, I also want to know why that route was selected and which part types it supports.
If there are critical machined dimensions, then a CMM may be relevant.
If the customer requires a mechanical test, then the tensile-testing equipment, fixture, specimen and acceptance criteria matter.
If ultrasonic inspection is suitable for the part, then the C-scan system becomes relevant.
Without the production route, a collection of equipment photos does not tell me very much about my order.

Some outsourcing is normal. Losing control of the product is not.
A complete carbon fiber product can involve several very different processes.
The carbon fiber part may be made in one facility. Aluminum parts may need machining and anodizing. Plastic parts may come from injection molding. Printing or another surface treatment may be done by a specialist supplier.
I do not think a factory has to perform every possible process under one roof to be a good long-term supplier.
What I do want to know is who is managing those outside processes and who takes responsibility when something goes wrong.
If I place the order with one supplier, I expect that supplier to manage its subcontractors. I do not want to become the person chasing five different factories because a metal part no longer fits a carbon fiber assembly.
That distinction matters.
A supplier can use outside resources and still control the final product very well.
But if every problem is explained as "that is our subcontractor's fault," the buyer is no longer working with one responsible supplier. The buyer is managing the supply chain himself.
Do not compare prices until you know what everyone has included
Custom carbon fiber quotations can be surprisingly far apart.
The first reaction is often that one supplier is cheap and another is expensive.
Sometimes that is true.
Very often, they are simply not quoting the same scope.
One supplier may quote only the carbon fiber body. Another may include locking parts, machining, assembly and packaging. Tooling may be included in one quotation and separate in another. Inspection may mean a visual check to one factory and a dimensional report or test record to another.
Even material assumptions may be different.
This is why a low price by itself does not tell me very much.
Before comparing prices, I want each supplier to explain what is included, what is not included, which drawing revision they used and what still needs to be confirmed.

A clear quotation is useful for another reason as well.
It gives you an early look at how clearly that company may communicate once the project becomes more complicated.
I use the first sample order to judge the supplier too
The first sample is obviously meant to test the product.
I also use it to watch how the supplier works.
Did they keep the correct drawing revision after the first change?
When they found a problem, did they explain it or try to move responsibility somewhere else?
If the sample was going to be late, did they tell the buyer early enough to adjust the schedule?
Did the salesperson and engineer give the same technical answer?
After the first modification, did the team still understand what had changed and why? That last one matters most. A team that loses track of revisions is not ready for long-term production.

These details rarely appear in a factory introduction, but they matter a lot when the product will be purchased repeatedly.
They become even more important after the first issue appears.
For carbon fiber assemblies, the problem may be a tube-fit change, a locking part that behaves differently after assembly, machining that exposes more fiber than expected, a metal interface that does not match, a cosmetic difference between batches or a new customer requirement that affects the original design.
No supplier can promise that a custom project will never have a problem.
What I want to see is how the problem is handled.
Can the team explain what happened? Can they separate an immediate fix from the change needed for the next batch? Do they update the drawing, process or inspection point when necessary?
By the end of the first order, I should understand the supplier better than I did when we first started talking.
I should know what they are good at, where their limits are, who actually solves the technical problems and how they behave when the original plan changes.
If all of that is still unclear after the first project, I would be careful about calling the relationship "long term" simply because one sample was eventually delivered.
